Writing your proposal

Whoever your funder will be, it’s a good idea for your ethics statement to address the six key principles set out in the ESRC Framework for Research Ethics. So you need to be able to explain how: you are ensuring quality and integrity of your research; you will seek informed consent; you will respect the confidentiality and anonymity of your research respondents; you will ensure that your participants will participate in your study voluntarily; you will avoid harm to your participants; and you can show that your research is independent and impartial.

Key Elements of the Research Proposal

Do you know that the key element of your research proposal will be its methodology section?   Imagine this: You are competing with several other organizations for grant money to conduct an investigation into a new treatment for cancer.   You will need to convince the grant foundation that their money will be well spent, and that you will manage this investigation well. How can they believe that you will produce results if you do not tell them about the methods you intend to use in order to assess and study your research and data?  Will you conduct experiments, or will you study existing groups of individuals? Will you collect numerical data or anecdotes?  How will you know that you have tested the correct populations of people or that your reasoning was sound?  Based on your research proposal's methodology, the grant foundation will either approve or disapprove your investigation, and will determine the amount of your grant.

Research Proposals - Budget

The budget is a line item (tabular) representation of the expenses associated with the proposal project. The Budget Justification contains more in depth detail of the costs behind the line items, and sometimes explains the use of the funds where not evident. Examples include the need for consultants, or the unavailability within the University of an item of equipment proposed for purchase. Foreign travel should be specifically detailed and justified, and not combined with domestic travel. The need to travel to professional meetings should be tied to the proposed project, if possible.

Research Guides: Organizing Your Social Sciences Research Paper: Writing a Research Proposal

Beginning the Proposal Process As with writing a regular academic paper, research proposals are generally organized the same way throughout most social science disciplines. Proposals vary between ten and twenty-five pages in length. However, before you begin, read the assignment carefully and, if anything seems unclear, ask your professor whether there are any specific requirements for organizing and writing the proposal. A good place to begin is to ask yourself a series of questions: What do I want to study? Why is the topic important? How is it significant within the subject areas covered in my class? What problems will it help solve? How does it build upon [and hopefully go beyond] research already conducted on the topic? What exactly should I plan to do, and can I get it done in the time available? In general, a compelling research proposal should document your knowledge of the topic and demonstrate your enthusiasm for conducting the study.
