What are the best project topics in civil engineering for final year?

I will tell you about our final year B.Tech. project. We were a batch of around 120 students and all the students were asked to pursue the same project in groups of 10-11. The project was titled 'Transportation Infrastructure Rejuvenation Strategies for Roorkee', wherein we were supposed to propose improvements in Transportation Infrastructure given improper traffic planning and increasing congestion in roads and bus stand in the city. Apart from this, we were also supposed to design a bridge across the canal at a specified location.

To accomplish the above task, we had 2 semesters. The problem statement of the project was so framed that each of the aspects was sufficiently covered. Here's a brief info:

  1. Geomatics/Survey: Preparing the map of road stretches and bridge site by performing GPS and TS surveys. Further compiling data collected from various surveys in arc GIS and analysing them in interpretable formats (Contour Maps, Heat Maps etc.) to propose traffic planning strategies incorporating ITS.
  2. Geotechnical Engg: Performing SPT at bridge site, prepare bore log sheet and conducting various laboratory tests for soil sample at foundation level to obtain soil quality parameters for designing sub structure of the bridge.
  3. Environmental Engg: Noise Level Survey and Air Quality Monitoring (SPM, NOx and SO2), a spatial variation of which was plotted along with other spatial variables and inferences drawn were incorporated in strategies proposed for traffic management in the city.
  4. Hydraulics: Hydraulic design of the bridge. Calculation of Mean Scour Depth and Afflux. Design of storm water drainage.
  5. Structure: Design of Pre-stressed Concrete Girder bridge.
  6. Transportation Engg: Conduct traffic surveys (traffic volume survey, OD survey, Spot speed survey), Pavement Health Analysis (FWD test for obtaining remaining life of the pavement, Potholes, Cracks, Rutting etc.) and finally proposing strengthening and widening works for improvement of road stretches. Further data from all the surveys was compiled to prepare a GIS database and ITS was proposed at different locations based on the inferences drawn from the surveyed data. Approach road and approach slab for the bridge on both ends was also designed considering comfort and psychological requirements. Redesign of Bus Depot was also proposed.

It was a large project and was set up in context of Roorkee being proposed as one of the smart cities in 'Smart Cities Mission' program by Ministry of Urban Development, GOI. The project gave us enough idea about the components and scale of consultancy projects in Civil Engineering in India.

In Structural Engineering,You can go for using different simulation softwares like STAAD to validate different theorems used in structural analysis.also you can compare the software results with the laboratory results and thus comment on the accuracy of the software.Else you can perform simulation on any building and thus analyse the generation of stresses. If you are willing to work hard, you can also learn finite element and then do the simulation.If you want to pursue projects in transportation engineering, then NMT is ag ood field. You can also work transportation in smart cities. Else you could compare different transport systems by doing a sample study and hence comment on the feasibility of different systems under different conditions.Thanks for A2A.
